Are YOU a nostalgic gamer?

Journal Entry: Thu Jul 24, 2008, 8:09 AM
  • Mood: Rant
Video games have been growing in popularity since the earlier 1980's. This means we are getting close to 30 years worth of development. We have gone from games like pong and text based King's Quest, all the way to recent installment giants like Halo, Grand Theft Auto, and incredibly popular new title series like Bioshock.
Over all these years genres have been created like "sports" and "shooter" and "platform"...
Given all these genres sometimes you get gamers that stick to one genre and generally don't explore outside of that little box. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just that some people know what they like and like what they know. For years I called myself purely an "Adventure gamer" (NOT games like zelda (rpg) or assasins creed (Action Adventure)) but games like Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, The Dig, Indigo Prophecy, The Longest Journey and so forth.

Now combining the plethora of genres and the nearly 3 decades of development we are seeing a huge rise in a new kind of gamer: the Nostalgic Gamer.

Nostalgic Gamer likes original mario, original sonic, original this and that... the days of the 8-bit characters and 2d side scrolling or even now the absolute dedication to some of the earliest clunky 3d games for the n64 and sega saturn and dreamcast. I'm NEVER going to say that these game's weren't great but PLEASE:
Don't EVER say to me that those games were better than titles they make today.

Most of the Nostalgic Gamers say these old titles had a higher difficulty rating, but this isn't because of the skill in which the game was created!
These games forced limited lives onto you, forced you to play the entire thing in one sitting or else you lost your place, or made levels nearly impossible to navigate without memorizing every turn, or the graphics are so poor that you can't tell were certain items or enemies are.
That's not real challenge. Most of that is just the limitation developers had to face when making the game!
Today's games are (mostly) skillfully created and have new ways to challenge a gamer.
They provide different unlockables and intricate environments in which to side-quest in. They allow a certain amount of freedom-of-choice and so allow YOU to create the difficulty.
Sure you can get through Crackdown with super powers and snipe every enemy from afar, but did you ever think to make the CHOICE to only go through it with fists?

Old games WERE good, but that doesn't mean they stand up well to modern giants. Many games do still retain entertainment value, but that doesn't make them "awesome".
I do enjoy LOTS of older titles (ESPECIALLY in the adventure game genre) but I don't feel that old games are better than new ones for the sake they are old or because they provide better challenge.
Give me the kind of challenge I can overcome over impossibly frustrating odds ANY day.

Lastly, just because you REMEMBER something being good doesn't mean it was. When that old game came out for the first time and you laid your hands on it for the first time it was brand new and fresh. That made it more exciting than if it had been released today.

Besides, if you want a challenge go play something like Ninja Gaiden, k?
